32 The oracle tells Neo that the Matrix architect's purpose is to balance the equation and the oracle's purpose is to unbalance the equation. The Yin (female), Jung's anima figure, or neurologists' right-brain activity, can all be described by words like intuitive, religious, mystical, occult or psychic. And all these qualities have constantly been suppressed by the rational thinking and competitive aggression of the Yang (male), Jung's animus, or neurologists' left-brain activity. The intuitive process is missing from our society. Research in autism reveals the male-dominant ability to systemize is not balanced by the female-dominant ability to empathize. Has our male-dominated society become autistic with the compulsive need to systemize human behavior at the expense of human acceptance?

To achieve a state of dynamic balance, a radically different social and economic structure will be needed: a cultural revolution in the true sense of the word. The survival of our whole civilization may depend on our ability to adapt some of the yin attitudes of eastern mysticism: to experience the wholeness of nature and the art of living with it in harmony. Eastern mystics and modern physicists agree that there is a different reality behind the superficial mechanistic appearance that we call reality in our everyday life.

In the West we looked outside ourselves for truth, dividing up our intellect and reason to see if reality's secrets were hiding inside of things. In the East, attention was directed inward, relying more on intuition and experiential knowing, seeking to resolve the questions themselves by the realization of non-duality and the great mystery of consciousness. In recent decades, a bridge has been built between the two civilizations, connecting the two hemispheres of the world brain.

There is now an opportunity for an intimate relationship between consciousness and scientific meaning. To live in a world where science is supported by an understanding of consciousness is to live in a world that is both useful and meaningful.
